Genesis 1

1. The Primordial State (Genesis 1:1–2)

  • “In the beginning, God created…” — Introduces God (Elohim) existing before time, space, and matter. He acts as the sole primary cause of the universe.

  • “…and the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” — Sets up the active, personal presence of God preparing to bring order to chaos.

2. Days 1–3: Establishing Order (Genesis 1:3–13)

  • Day 1 (v. 3–5): God commands light into existence (“Let there be light“). He separates light from darkness, establishing day, night, and the flow of time.

  • Day 2 (v. 6–8): God creates an expanse (raqia) to separate the waters above from the waters below, forming the atmosphere.

  • Day 3 (v. 9–13): God gathers the lower waters to reveal dry ground, creating land and seas. He commands the earth to sprout vegetation, plants, and fruit-bearing trees yielding seeds according to their kinds.

3. Days 4–6: Filling with Life (Genesis 1:14–31)

  • Day 4 (v. 14–19): God sets luminaries in the expanse to rule the day (sun) and night (moon), and to mark seasons, days, and years.

  • Day 5 (v. 20–23): Swarms of living creatures fill the seas and birds fill the sky. God pronounces the first blessing: “Be fruitful and multiply.”

  • Day 6 (v. 24–31): God forms land animals and culminates His creative work with humanity.

4. The Creation of Humanity (Genesis 1:26–28)

  • Image of God (Imago Dei): Humanity is uniquely created in the image and likeness of God, granting intrinsic dignity, value, and identity to every person.

  • The Cultural Mandate: God assigns human beings authority to rule over creation as wise stewards, blessing them to be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth.
